Clear Aligners in Downey, CA

Clear aligners are a series of removable trays that move teeth without brackets or wires. They suit mild to moderate cases and patients who want a discreet option and can commit to daily wear. Questions about aligners? Call or text (562) 904-6930, or leave Dr. Restrepo a message at (562) 955-7677.

What it is

Each set of trays is shaped slightly differently from the last. You wear a set for the period the doctor prescribes, then move to the next set, and each step moves your teeth a small, planned amount. The trays are made from clear medical-grade thermoplastic, which is why they are difficult to notice during the day.

Dr. Restrepo personally plans every aligner case in-house using your digital scan, and checks your progress in person as treatment moves along. Aligners are an excellent tool for mild to moderate crowding and spacing, shorter treatment plans, retreatment after past orthodontics, and patients who prefer no metal in their mouth. Complex bite movements, significant rotations, and deep bites are often better served by braces, and the consultation is where that call is made.

Benefits

For the right case and the right patient routine, aligners offer a treatment experience braces cannot match, mostly because the trays come out.

  • Discreet look. Clear trays are hard to notice in conversation and in photos, which matters to many adult patients.
  • Removable for eating and hygiene. Take them out to eat, so there are no food restrictions, and brush and floss normally.
  • No brackets rubbing cheeks. Smooth plastic means none of the cheek irritation that wires can cause early in braces treatment.
  • Efficient office visits. Progress check-ins run every 4 to 8 weeks depending on the case, and they are usually short.

What to expect

Your free orthodontic consultation covers whether aligners fit both your bite and your daily routine, because the treatment only works if the trays stay in. If you move forward, we take a digital scan of your teeth. No impression material, just the scanner.

You then review your projected plan before anything is made. When the trays arrive, you receive the first sets with clear instructions: wear them 20 to 22 hours a day, take them out only to eat, drink anything but water, and clean them, and switch sets on the schedule the doctor sets. Your teeth will usually feel sore for a day or two with each new set. That pressure is the tray doing its job.

Check-ins every 4 to 8 weeks track your progress in person. One refinement set is included if your teeth need extra guidance mid-course. When treatment is done, retainers hold the result. You receive exact costs in writing before treatment starts.

Good to know

  • Aligners only work if you wear them. Inconsistent wear stalls progress or lets teeth drift, which extends treatment.
  • Trays can be lost or cracked. Replacements cost time and money, so a case for storage is worth the habit.
  • Small tooth-colored attachments are sometimes bonded to certain teeth to help the trays grip. They are barely visible and come off at the end.
  • Not every case suits aligners. If your bite needs movements trays cannot deliver predictably, the doctor will recommend braces instead.

Risks of not treating it

The same risks apply as with any untreated bite problem. Crowding and misalignment tend to get worse rather than better with time. Uneven wear, harder cleaning, and jaw strain build up over the years, and the correction gets bigger the longer you wait.

FAQ

Questions, answered

How many hours a day do I have to wear them?

Usually 20 to 22 hours. Take them out only to eat, drink anything but water, and brush. Progress depends directly on wear time.

Can I eat with aligners in?

No. Always remove them to eat or drink anything but plain water, then brush before putting them back in. Eating with trays in can stain and crack them.

How often do I come in during treatment?

Progress check-ins are usually every 4 to 8 weeks depending on the case. The doctor verifies the teeth are tracking with the plan at each visit.

What happens if I lose or crack a tray?

Call the office. Go back to your previous set in the meantime and do not skip ahead to the next one without guidance, since an ill-fitting tray can move teeth the wrong way.

Dental term: attachment. A small tooth-colored bump bonded to a tooth that gives the aligner tray something to grip, helping guide difficult movements.
